Older than Legend

Hindu pilgrims gather on the banks of the Ganges River, in the holy city of Varanasi, or Benares, in the northern Indian state of Utter Pradesh.

Known to the devout as Kashi – ‘the Luminous’ – Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and is considered by many to be the holiest of all pilgrimage sites in India.

As Mark Twain famously observed: “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.

We photograph Varanasi during our Sacred India Photography Photography Expedition
