Dispatches from The Theyyam Photography Expedition™

Travel Photography Workshop in Kerala

Curious onlookers peer into a purpose-built tent, where a group of Theyyam artists prepares for a temple festival, in the Malabar region of Kerala.

The process of becoming a deity during a Theyyam performance requires intense physical and mental training; face and ‘body-writing’, as the make-up is known, and costuming, are the last of many, complex, preliminary rituals that precede an artist’s transition into the divine state of ‘Theyyam’.

Here, the artist at the centre prepares to embody the hunter god Kandanar Kelan, one of the most dangerous Theyyams to perform, which will require him to repeatedly jump through fire.
