Revealer of Light

Dressed in red and adorned with ritual ornaments and garlands, an Oracle – ‘Velichappadu’ in the local Malayalam language, ‘the one who throws light on any problems’ – dances while in a trance, to call forth the spirit inhabiting the body of a Theyyam performer to participate in a temple ceremony.

Also known as ‘Komaram’ (‘revealer of light’), the figure of the Oracle – who is believed to be a representation of a temple’s deity – is an integral part of the rural life of Kerala’s northern Malabar region, where almost every village has its own particular, protector deity.
